A Whirlwind Weekend in Toronto: Islands, Falls, and Vegan Finds
My family and I recently packed our bags for a quick two-night getaway to one of my favorite cities, Toronto. We found a massive 7-bedroom Airbnb in Mississauga to serve as our home base, giving us plenty of space to relax after our days of exploring the city and its surroundings.
Discovering a New Perspective of the City
Even though I’ve been to Toronto many times, this trip offered a completely new and breathtaking experience. We took a tour of the Toronto Islands—a destination I’m almost embarrassed to admit I never knew existed! The boat tour around them was fantastic, providing some of the most amazing and picture-perfect views of the city skyline. I really got the expression people go out to the islands to have a good time, whether just socializing or for a real party. It's a definite must-do for anyone visiting, whether it's your first time or your tenth. The boat tour was affordable, educational and filled with great views of the city. You'll find plenty of options with a quick Google search.
A Culinary Quest
One of my personal travel traditions is to seek out and try vegan restaurants in every new city I visit. On this trip, I had the chance to try some "Un-Chicken and Waffles." While I'd describe the meal as good rather than great, the experience of exploring Toronto's diverse food scene is always a highlight. It’s the thrill of the hunt and the joy of trying something new that truly counts.
The Majestic Power of Niagara
We also took the time for a side trip to Niagara Falls, which was my second visit to the iconic landmark. The sheer power and scale of the falls are just as awe-inspiring every time. We watched the *Maid of the Mist* boats, packed with poncho-clad tourists, venture right into the heart of the spray. Watching the spectacle was incredible, but I'm still not convinced I'm ready to get that soaked myself!
A Note on Modern Travel
A fascinating aspect of this particular trip was how seamlessly modern technology has integrated into international travel. This was the first time I've ever visited Toronto without exchanging a single US dollar for Canadian cash. In our digital age of tap-to-pay and credit cards, the need for local currency is almost non-existent for a short trip. Of course, the exchange still happens quietly behind the scenes, but the convenience is undeniable.
From the islands to the falls, our quick trip was a reminder that there's always something new to discover, even in a familiar place.
