REVIEWS937: Art Basel Miami Beach 2016

Thin Man - Atelier Van Lieshout

(Miami Beach, FL) - This year I lengthened my stay, but 4 days and 3 nights were still barely enough to see a fraction of all the art and splendor during the annual Art Basel fair held each December in Miami Beach.  I spent 3 days just at Art Basel's public and ticketed exhibits and site companion Design Miami. For the first time, I also attended Spectrum Miami, what I considered a slightly more accessible art fair than Art Basel and Curator Miami, an invitation-only party showcasing art, beauty and luxury.  I'm sure attendance at the fair was down due to earlier reports in the year of Zika virus cases, but 70,000 plus collectors, gallerist, advisors, consultants and other art enthusiasts were still on hand to revel in the international art, deal making and networking. Not surprisingly, among other trends, it wasn't hard to see the influence of the political climate at this year's fair which you may notice in my photos below.

This was my second year attending the fair and really my second year diving into my new hobby of art history and collecting, so I'm still watching and learning from the seasoned players.  I didn't make any purchases this time, but next trip I will not leave Miami without adding at least one new work of art to my collection.

Ambitious large‐scale artworks, films and performances became part of the city's outdoor landscape at nearby Collins Park and SoundScape Park.

Curator Miami - An exclusive cocktail party celebrating art, beauty and luxury hosted by The Macallan and Worth Group. The event was headlined by a live art experience by Ron Burkhardt, the 2017 Karma Revero and complimentary drams of scotch from The Macallan.  The event also featured fine cigars from Gurkha, technology from LG Signature and entertainment including live musicians and talented ladies contorting inside a large hoop suspended several feet off the floor.
