REVIEWS937: The Metropolitan Art Museum

(Temple of Dendur)
(New York, NY) - Recently named the world's #1 museum in the TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice™ awards, The Metropolitan Art Museum located in the Upper West Side of the Manhattan borough of New York proved more than worthy of the award during my visit there over the weekend. I tried to spend time in each of the museums galleries from Modern Art & Contemporary Art to the Arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas to get a feel for the museum's variety and importance from both an art history and a world history perspective.  I was impressed with the curation of each gallery but probably none more than the Egyptian Art which included everything from ancient pottery, mummies with sarcophagus to the amazing, reconstructed Temple of Dendur.

The museum really has something for everyone, young and the not so young. There is a library and interactive areas for students and families on the lower level. In addition, The Met Roof currently has a sculpture on view, PyschoBarn, from British artist Cornelia Parker to go along with its expansive views of Central Park and the New York skyline.  The roof also includes plenty of seating and a bar which includes snacks and adult beverages.  The Met also has other locations in Manhattan, The Met Breuer and The Met Cloisters, which I couldn't make this time, but I will definitely visit on my next trip. Of course, no museum would be complete without a gift shop and in this case several gift shops which I actually purchased several items from and had shipped back home to Dayton.

Map out your visit ahead of time or just roam the galleries and exhibitions like I did, but either way prepare for a fantastic art experience. http://www.metmuseum.org/

My New York visit coincided with the 15 year anniversary of 9/11 and the mass of admission stickers left on the boards leaving the museum may have on any other day seemed insignificant, but on this day looked at least to me like its own work of art and small memorial to the day.

~ safe travels ~
