The New Whitney Museum (New York City)

(Manhattan, NY) - Situated in the Meat Packing District on the far West Side of Manhattan, the new Whitney Museum of American Art is work of art in itself, designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano.  The Whitney opened to the public in its new location on May 1, 2015 from its former location on Madison Avenue.  Located neatly between the High Line and the Hudson River, the museum resembles a glass ship heading out to sea.  From the street, you can see many of the museum's visitors peering out over one the many decks.

During my visit I toured the museum's inaugural exhibit, America Is Hard to See which runs from May 1 - September 27, 2015.  The exhibit encompassed 6 of the museum's 8 floors and was a history of American Art history from the twentieth century, featuring works from de Kooning, Andy Warhol, Georgia O'Keeffe, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Robert Henri and many others.

The Whitney's art collection, beautiful building, closeness with the neighborhood, ground floor retail and its proximity to the High Line make it a destination where you can spend an entire day appreciating art and exploring all the building and neighborhood have to offer.

The new Whitney is located in the Meatpacking District at 99 Gansevoort Street, at the southern entrance to the High Line.
